Adoption Process

Before offering our cats and dogs for adoption they all undertake a vet health care check plus our dogs receive a behavioural assessment. All new arrivals are vaccinated, wormed and if needed microchipped and sterilized.

Puppies and Kittens who are adopted prior to the suitable age of desexing will be required, as per the adoption agreement, to bring back their puppy or kitten to APS to have the desexing done by our vet staff.

The adoption cost goes towards covering some of the veterinary, training and food expenses incurred in rescuing and
rehoming.  All prices include GST.

Adopting a Dog from APS

Have a good look around and choose a number of dogs that might be suitable, spend a little time with them, take them for a walk, and don’t forget to ask us about the dogs we have in foster.

We are very keen to ensure a prospective new owner’s lifestyle and home environment is compatible with an individual dog. Every effort is therefore made to screen dogs and potential owners for mutual suitability.Home checks will also need to be undertaken prior to adoption.

Every dog we re-home is done so on the understanding that it may be returned if the dog does not prove suitable for the new owners. Our aim is solely to match the right dog with the right individual or family. It is important that everyone gets along including children, cats, and your other dog.

Our experienced Carers will take you to a quiet area where a controlled dog-meet will take place so that you can interact socially with the dog and be certain that the choice you have made is the right one – for everyone.

Adopting a Cat from APS

Carers on duty are there to help guide you in deciding the right cat/kitten for your home environment, especially if you have other pets and or  young children.

Questions that may be asked of you are – Is the cat/kitten going to spend long hours on their own?   Do they have a cat run/enclosure to keep them safe?  Are they going to be an indoor cat/kitten?

Also don’t forget with the new cat laws, that they will need to be registered with the local council as soon as possible

This website is live and is updated frequently. However, there is a chance that by the time you arrive at the Refuge the dog or cat that you have an interest in may have already been adopted.

We unfortunately cannot put animals on hold over the phone.
